This thesis of translation and commentary aims at investigating the translation of Qur’anic allusions in Nardeen Abu Nabaa’s Enamored of Him (2015) from Arabic into English, as well as investigating to what extent Ritva Leppihalme’s (1997) strategies of translating allusions have been applicable in my translation of the first five chapters. This study aims also at identifying the difficulty in comprehending Qur’anic allusions in TL, based on the strategy adopted in translating the allusions and other factors that are involved in the translation of allusion for both the translator and the TT readers. These factors include cultural familiarity, linguistic competence, the ability to recognize allusions in their forms, proper noun and key phrase allusions in the cultural context of the TL. In addition, the “culture bump” that occurs to TT readers while encountering unfamiliar allusion. This study would shed light, as well, on the extent to which the translator has understood the function of allusions in the TT through studying some examples from the ST, and classifying them in tables followed by the analysis of the functions of allusions in the novel. The study has shown that the standard translation is the optimal translation strategy in case of allusion being familiar to the TT readers. In contrast, allusions may become puzzle or “culture bump” when they are unfamiliar, here comes the role of the competent translator to employ creativity of using functional interpretive possibilities approach.
