Translating The Left's Jewish Problem: Jeremy Corbyn, Israel and Anti-Semitism: Ideology and Appraisal Theory
This thesis focuses on my translation of one chapter of a book titled The Left’s Jewish Problem: Jeremy Corbyn, Israel and Anti-Semitism by Dave Rich, in which he discusses the stance of the Left Wing in the UK towards the Palestine-Israel conflict. He also accuses some members of the Left of anti-Semitism, including the head of the Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn. My translation is preceded by a critical analysis that discusses the strategies followed in detecting the ideological elements of the text and the author’s concealed stance through the use of Martin and White’s Appraisal Framework that talks about the language of evaluation, which was based on Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar. In my analysis, I examined two areas of focus within the chosen framework: (1) Attribution and (2) Attitudinal assessment. Using those tools, I aim to produce a target text that maintains the subtlety of the ideology in the source text, without any interference in the author’s stance, opinion, or ideology.
