This thesis is an Arabic translation and English commentary of the first chapter ‘Lost for Words’ from the book Enough said: What’s gone wrong with the language of politics? in which Mark Thompson, the president and CEO of the New York Times company, addresses the problems that face public and political discourse. The thesis offers an analysis that demonstrates how I have applied Martin and White’s Appraisal Framework (2005) and, more specifically, the language of evaluating (as conceptualized by Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics) and the textual meta-function. Both were used to produce the translation with the overarching aim of maintaining the same stance and ideology of the source text in the target text, with minimal to no interventions on my part as a translator. The translation from English into Arabic has been undertaken and commented on through three areas of focus that are theoretically inspired: (1) Attribution, (2) attitudinal assessments, and (3) textual elements.
