Organizational Efficiency for Sustainability: The Case of Qatar

Organizational efficiency (OE) is generally defined as a state of organization were maximum output is generated with minimum input and minimal wastage of resources. Organizational or institutional efficiency in public and private sector enterprises plays important role in sustaining economic and social development through continuous value creation for the countries. There are many models and frameworks established to measure the effectiveness and efficiency of organizations. However, these models and frameworks vary widely and finding an optimal model for an organization keeping in mind the local culture and traditions is a difficult task.While organizations measure their efficiency through resource utilized to achieve objectives and operational goals, it also quantifies investments and efforts to achieve an organization’s goals along with evaluating impacts or results of investments and efforts. Comparing various definitions, it is identified that business efficiency is linked to profitability and growth of a business in financial terms, and organizational efficiency indicates the overall health of the organization in a holistic manner. In this research, author has aimed to define organizational efficiency, identify indicators used by Qatari organizations, compare them with international best practices to understand the state of efficiency in Qatari organizations, identify the root-causes of perceptional inefficiencies systematically and develop tailored strategies to improve organizational efficiency in Qatari organizations. The Methods of this research were based on multiple streams of information (triangulation of data source), in this case (i) Systematic literature Review, (ii) Online survey (iii) observation & iteration with constructs from the literature review. The survey conducted amongst employees of various Qatari organizations from a wide range of business verticals have revealed major causes of inefficiencies in Qatari Organizations. The result of the survey examined and will be use as a platform towards the need for establishing a robust and comprehensive framework that could be employed by Qatari organizations to improve their organizational efficiency while considering all the Qatari’s context.
