Evaluating the Impact of Voiced-Over Materials on Secondary School Students Learning Biology
The study aims to explore the use of voice-over in the educational environment of Qatari public schools (Grade 10 – Biology classes). It also aims to measure young adults’ learning outcomes when using voiced-over materials to study biology. It describes how voice-over is perceived by a sample of Grade 10 students as a tool to facilitate the understanding/learning of biology topics.
A source text in biology was selected to be taught by two biology teachers to a sample of 60 Grade 10 students. 30 of them were taught the text only, and the other 30 students were taught the text enhanced by voiced-over video. During the classes, two school teachers observed the lessons. After that, the students were tested and surveyed. The two biology teachers were interviewed.
The results of the study show that the students who were taught the biology lesson based on both text and voiced-over video were more motivated and interested in the class. Their feedback was more positive for the text enhanced by voiced-over videos. Furthermore, they achieved better results in the test. The biology teachers preferred enhancing their lessons with audiovisual materials, such as voiced-over videos, to facilitate the process of teaching biology and improving students’ academic achievements in this subject.
