Volvulus occurs when a dilated colon twists around its mesenteric axis, leading to intestinal obstruction. Sigmoid volvulus is an uncommon cause of intestinal obstruction primarily affecting older adults, with average age of 70 years and a higher incidence in men. Recently, there have been reports of sigmoid volvulus occurring in younger patients and in children with colonic motility issues. Sigmoid volvulus is an emergency abdominal condition that can lead to bowel ischemia, necrosis, and perforation if diagnosis is delayed or left untreated.
