Background

Staff engagement is crucial for patient care, staff retention, and a positive workplace atmosphere. This study analyzes findings of the nurse engagement survey conducted at Al Wakra Hospital's Obstetrics and Gynecology Emergency Department (OG ED) from April 2022 to December 2023 to identify key factors affecting staff engagement and suggest improvements.

Methods

An online survey was regularly given to all OG ED registered nurses and midwives for a year. It covered aspects like communication, workload, career growth, leadership support, appreciation, recognition, and staff well-being.2 Quantitative answers were analyzed descriptively, while qualitative data underwent thematic analysis. The SWOT framework was used to summarize findings and create targeted strategies.

Results

The survey received an 88% response rate (31 out of 35 staff) and uncovered important findings. Nurses and midwives were content with their dedication to patient care but faced issues with communication among different teams. Workload stress consistently affected job satisfaction and work-life balance. Staff wanted more recognition, appreciation, and clear career development paths. External challenges like staffing shortages also posed threats to staff engagement. By addressing key areas such as communication, workload, professional development, and recognition, the Department witnessed significant improvements in patient satisfaction, staff turnover, and nurse engagement. These outcomes not only highlight the importance of strategic interventions in creating a supportive and fulfilling work environment but also underscore the critical role of staff engagement in achieving superior patient care and fostering a positive workplace culture (Figures 1 and 2).

Conclusion

The study results offer valuable insights into staff engagement in the Department. The suggested strategies, such as better communication, workload management, recognition programs, and training initiatives for OB ED Nurses and Midwives, provide actionable ways to boost staff engagement and tackle challenges. Moving forward, continuous efforts in these areas are essential to further build upon the progress made
